Komnas HAM Sends Back 7 Cases of Serious Human Rights Violations to the Attorney General's Office

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) Beka Ulung Hapsara said that seven files on cases of gross human rights violations that were returned by the Attorney General's Office had been sent back.

He said this when met at the Komnas HAM Office, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (19/2019).

"So far, the seven files sent by JA to Komnas have been returned to JA," said Beka.

Previously, on 27 November 2018, the Attorney General's Office returned nine human rights case files to Komnas HAM. However, seven of the nine files were judged to have had no progress whatsoever from the results of the AGO's investigation.

With no progress on the seven case files, Komnas HAM returned the case files to the Prosecutor's Office accompanied by a letter.

Through the letter, Komnas HAM explained that the files returned by the Attorney General's Office had no new clues. “On 27 December, according to the Law's instructions, 30 days after the response, returned the file to JA with a letter. The contents return because there are no new clues and the status increases

That's Komnas HAM's communication with JA," said Beka. Komnas HAM hopes that the status of the case can be upgraded to an investigation after they submit the file to the Attorney General's Office.

The nine case files returned by the AGO to Komnas HAM were the 1965/1966 incident, the 1998 Talangsari Lampung incident, the 1982-1985 mysterious shooting incident, the Trisakti incident, Semanggi I and Semanggi II.

Then, the files on the May 1998 Riots, the 1997-1998 Enforced Disappearances, the Wasior and Wamena Incidents, May 3, 1999, KKA Junction Incident in Aceh Province, as well as the Geudong House and other Sattis posts in Aceh Province.

Of all these incidents, the Attorney General's Office only made progress in two cases, namely the KAA intersection case on May 3, 1999, and the Gedong House and Sattis Post Incident in Aceh.
