Two motorcycle riders shot Dayan. At that time, he was on his way home from the Unsyiah campus to his residence. According to Misran, also the victim's driver, the perpetrator fired two shots that hit the rear left window of the car. Then, the shot, thought to have come from a long-barreled weapon, hit the victim's cheek and left shoulder. After the shooting, the two perpetrators immediately fled toward the city. Before he died, Dayan was rushed to Doctor Zainal Abidin General Hospital, Banda Aceh, about 200 meters from the scene.
