Footsteps at the Former Keudah Prison

Keudah Prison, located in the Kuta Alam sub-district, right at the intersection after the descent of the Peunayong bridge towards Merduati. Previously, this place was used as a detention room for hundreds of prisoners from the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). The name of the most recognizable figure in prison is the GAM negotiator, Irwandi Yusuf. In January 2004, around 54 of the 143 GAM prisoners held in Keudah Prison were taken to Central Java before being placed separately, some of them to Nusakambangan, to Lhokseumawe (Tempo, January 22, 2004). Reportedly, five negotiators were also transferred at that time. Keudah Prison also collapsed due to the earthquake and the brunt of the Tsunami on December 26, 2004.
