Condemns the Repressive Action of the Security Forces in West Aceh, KontraS Aceh: Demonstration of Rights That Must Be Protected
Azharul Husna (Koordinator KontraS Aceh)

expressed his aspiration to reject the increase in fuel prices in front of the West Aceh DPRK Building.

Based on the information in the field, the action participants are doing long march to the DPRK Building.

However kericuhan justru terjadi ketika aparat mencegat mereka dan lalu menembakkan gas air mata ke arah massa. Akibatnya sejumlah mahasiswa tergeletak tak sadarkan diri sehingga terpaksa dibawa ke rumah sakit.

Not only that, dozens of students were also arrested by the police. At least 10 people were injured as a result of these repressive measures. The coordinator of KontraS Aceh, Azharul Husna, condemned the violent acts carried out by the security forces.

“The apparatus should secure it without repressing the masses. We deeply regret what happened in Meulaboh, students only want to express their aspirations, the authorities should protect them,” said Husna.

He continued, the demonstration is a form of conveying the aspirations of the community as well as evidence of democratic practices. Demonstrations are part of the freedom of expression and opinion guaranteed by law.

"Because it is guaranteed by the constitution, the apparatus should not regard the demonstration as a violation of the law, and should not respond to it with acts of violence," he urged.

Furthermore, the public's rejection of the increase in fuel prices is considered a very reasonable aspiration. All government policies regarding people's livelihoods need to be addressed critically, especially the current fuel price hike has drawn protests everywhere.

"We condemn the repressive actions of the security forces against students, and urge the arrests of students to be stopped immediately, this makes the situation even more intimidating for the masses who want to express their aspirations," he concluded.
